Unique & Innovative Mother’s Day DIY Gift Ideas
So, Mother’s Day is coming up and it’s time to show the woman who brought you into this crazy world just how grateful you are for it. Remember those childhood days of sitting for hours making cards and little gifts made from paper/toilet rolls/whatever else you could get your hands on from around the house… and remember how much she loved it? What happened to all that creativity? Mums love gifts that have some thought put into them, and treasure them forever (my mum still hangs a clay something-resembling-an-angel I made in primary school on the tree each year) so, this Mother’s Day, why not revive that creative spirit and get making something! Let’s use the fact that we’re now old enough to make something good that she can actually use! Below are some super simple and stylish hand-made ideas to inspire you to get a little crafty (even if you’re not usually the crafty type):
1. Painted Glass Vases:
A twist on the traditional bunch of flowers for Mother’s Day… classy and elegant, what mother wouldn’t love these lovely paint-dipped vases?
What you’ll need:
– Glass bottles (any kind will do!)
– Craft paint
– Newspaper
Put some paint into a bowl.
Dip glass bottle into the bowl, remove and place on some newspaper to dry.
If you want to add some to the bottle-neck as shown in the picture, do so once the bottom is dry.
Place your mum’s favourite wild flower inside and there you have it, a gorgeous home-made Mother’s Day vase!
2. Lavender Heat Pack:
Perfect for those few quiet moments mums have to enjoy and great for headaches and aches and pains, this heat pack has a touch of lavender for extra relaxation.
What you’ll need:
– Fabric (bags are 7 inches by 10 inches)
– Rice (half of a 5 pound bag)
– Lavender Essential Oil
– Thread, Scissors, Pins
– Sewing Machine (or alternatively sew by hand)
First mix around six drops of lavender oil into a bowl of rice, mix, and leave to infuse.
Next, cut two pieces of fabric, 7 inches by 20 inches each, and place the two pieces right-side together, pin the edges.
Leaving a two inch hole on one side, sew all the way around.
Turn the bag in the right way and half fill the bag with your lavender rice.
Sew up the hole and voila! Your gorgeous smelling lavender heat pack is complete!
3. Glitter Candle Holders:
What you’ll need:
– Glass pots
– Mod podge
– Newspaper
– Glitter!
This one is so simple it hardly needs spelling out… but in case you really aren’t crafty, here it is!
Cover bottom half of the glass pots with mod podge.
Tip some glitter on some newspaper.
Roll the sticky pots over the glitter.
Put a tea light inside and watch the magic happen!
4. Luxury Coconut Body Scrub:
Usually taking care of everyone else, every mother needs some well-deserved ‘me’ time to spoil herself. This utterly delicious smelling body scrub will give her senses a boost and leaving her feeling fabulously pampered.
What you’ll need:
– 1 cup of white sugar.
– 1/4 c. coconut oil
– Glass pot
– Ribbon
Mix the sugar and coconut oil together with the back of a spoon thoroughly until they combine (this will take a couple of minutes of mixing).
Scoop contents into glass pot and tie a ribbon of your choice around for decoration.
And there you have it, a gorgeous Mother’s Day gift that she can pamper herself with, that takes literally two minutes to make!
5. Rustic Photo Holder:
With so many photos on our screens nowadays, we rarely see them printed… don’t let those memories fade! Grab them and pin them up on this beautiful photograph displayer for your mum to smile at every day.
What you’ll need:
– An old frame
– String
– Nails/drawing pins
– Pegs
– Photos of you and your mum!
Push four drawing pins evenly spaced down each side of the frame.
Tie a piece of string across each pair of pins.
Print your favourite photos of you and your mother.
Clip the memories up with pegs and enjoy!
