How To Keep Up With Your Resolution

January 6, 2016

It’s that time of the year when we want to start afresh. It’s when we want to get better and make resolutions and promises to do more. Some want to get rid of their old habits while some want to learn new skills. And the New Year seems to be the perfect time to get a hold of ourselves.
Your resolutions can be as simple from waking up early to learning a language. True, you might be making resolutions everyday. But there is something about the resolutions taken up during Christmas and New Year are somewhat special than the others. People tend to take up some serious resolutions and they seem pretty determined to fulfil them.

Some Common Resolutions to take up this New Year!

So, what should you think for 2016? If you love to do more with your life this year, why not be innovative? If you are lacking of ideas, here are a few common resolutions most people make.

New Year Resolution

  • Invest money in a good project
  • To do charity. JustGiving.com is a great Fundraise platform for a charity.
  • Learn to sing, paint or dance

  • Give up alcohol
  • Play a new sport
  • Finish the backyard work
  • Complete last month’s painting …..and much more

There are many type of weird resolutions like taking bath daily, not listen to some artist’s song or to shave occasionally, god knows what not.

It’s Time to Be Determined!
While you would love to make new resolutions, do not lose focus. It has been observed that most people lose track, they fail to keep up with their resolutions. For most, the resolutions go well on track for a few days and weeks, and many give up by the month of February. In some cases, people have tried and managed to take them halfway to the month of June or July, but they eventually give up. And we often find them back to the same place in December thinking of some resolutions they are never going to fulfil.

How Strong Are You with This Year’s Resolution?
Resolutions like quit smoking or wake up early and exercising are the ones that fail the most and can be seen falling apart within the first few weeks itself. Such resolutions are difficult to keep up. One may resolve to do such things but they are stick to habits and tend to fall for these.

Failed Resolution

What do Studies Tell?
What do the surveys reveal about the resolutions? Here are some unexpected outcomes of statistical analysis carried out to understand the trend.

  • About 47% people are regular resolution maker, out of which only 7-8% are successful in achieving their resolution.
  • 35% poll to never taking up resolutions.
  • There are various types of resolution; self-improvement, money matters, relationship based. About 45% people have their resolutions aiming for self-improvement while 31% accept to have made resolutions regarding their relationships.
  • About 45% people fail to continue with their resolution after a week or 2!
  • While about 30% fail within a month, and it’s pretty amazing but 25% were able to take their resolutions as far as 6 months.

Some these stats might surprise you, but yes this is it. Most people who make resolutions surrender to their habits within a few weeks.

Why do they fail?
Some people were asked to discover the possible causes for resolution failures and some of the most common answered could be summarised as these:

• They find them unrealistic. Usually we overestimate our abilities and make promises hoping that they can be fulfilled with some tricks, some adjustments here and there. But when it comes to actually work them out, these promises seem like a long shot.
• They find them useless. Most people find their resolutions meaningless and waste. They seem unimportant and have no affect or they don’t address to their expectations.
• People feel they don’t have time to take care of such resolutions. They were never serious about fulfilling them.

It is just a matter of perception and belief. People who feel it’s important to fulfil their promises they made to themselves on Christmas and New Year, the ones who value them actually make an attempt towards the resolutions. But for those who just find it amusing to take up something, for fun, it is all about their mood and desire.
